In less than a month Adelaide will play host to its very first Supanova convention. This event actually celebrates the 10th anniversary of Supanova conventions in Australia and Retrospekt will be providing coverage. This of course begs the question, as a retro gamer what is at the event for you? I’m glad you asked!!!
Firstly you might be familiar with this lady?
In the mid to late 90s she was voiced by the lovely Yūko Miyamura who will be one of the Japanese seiyu (voice actors) at the event.
Yuko voiced Chun Li in the Street Fighter Alpha series, the Street Fighter EX series, Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter, X-Men vs Streetfighter, Marvel vs Capcom 1 & 2, Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo and Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix (Pocket Fighter). I know I’ll be digging through my collection to get some Street Fighter games and arcade boards signed!!
Additionally she was the voice of Asuka in Neon Genesis Evangelion, a favourite anime for many of the Retrospekt crew which also spawned some video games.
The next retro game themed guest is Elvira: Mistress of the Dark!!
Elvira used to present horror films on TV and has featured in 2 movies and 3 video games!!
There was the action packed “Elvira the Arcade Game” as well as 2 role playing games: “Elvira Mistress of the Dark” and “Elvira 2: The Jaws of Cerberus”. All 3 games were released on Commodore 64, Amiga, Atari ST and PC.
The last generation of video game systems played host to this very funny if very average game:
The voices of Bender and Fry will be at the convention and I know I’ll be taking the opportunity to get my copy signed!!
Billy West has also been in Gabriel Knight 3, Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly, Atomic Bomberman and Rayman 3 among others.
John DiMaggio has also starred in Final Fantasy X and X-2, XII, XIII, XIII-2, Kingdom Hearts 2 and the Simpsons Game among others.
Over the past couple of years Retrospekt has played host to a series of interviews with Dragonball stars that can be found by clicking the “Interviews” tab at the top of the page. If you enjoy Dragonball as much as I do then you’re in for a treat as the legendary Super Saiyan himself Broly will be attending!!
Vic was also Burter of the Ginyu Force in Dragonball Kai and will be the 5th signature on my already crowded copy of Dragonball: Raging Blast 2. Vic also played Vega in Street Fighter 2 V, Edward Elric in the Full Metal Alchemist series and games and has a list a mile long full of credits!!!
That’s a huge list right there, but we’re NOT DONE!! We couldn’t have a post about Supanova without mentioning Jaws!!
That’s right, Richard Kiel will be in attendance for all you Bond fans out there. In video games Richard voiced Jaws in the Pierce Brosnan’s final Bond adventure “Everything or Nothing” which featured on the Gamecube, XBOX and PS2, as well as the forthcoming 007 Legends.
James Marsters who also had involvement in the Dragonball franchise featured in some pretty decent Buffy the Vampire Slayer games that came out on XBOX, PS2 and Gamecube. Spike was such an iconic character and fans were more than happy to take control of the character in the sequel “Chaos Bleeds”
Maybe you have a copy for him to sign, I know I do!!
Phew, that was a long post… Hopefully it’s given you something to think about for the convention next month. Take a dig through that collection and get some autographs on those games!!
Supanova will be held on November 17th and 18th at the Adelaide Showgrounds. For more information on Supanova and the Supa guests visit the Supanova website by clicking here
